I am having problems getting my new DVD burner to work--even to read CD's. We traced problem to installation of NERO which was supplied with it. HP says it does not have a driver--except for burning operations, and that Windows has a default system driver for CD-DVD reading. ![]() After removing NERO, I have no driver and cannot use my CD at all. So if you can find the `low-level' Windows XP driver for CD/DVD reading I would be so happy. If you can find a driver other than NERO that will allow me to burn CD's and DVD's I will be a devotee. Thanks for any help. Your problem is not caused by a missing driver. Optical drives never require a driver other than what the XP os provides. If your problem is 'non-detection', a term which applies when the drive is not listed in My Computer or Device Manager or Windows Explorer. There are many, many threads in this section that give you directions on how to fix this problem. Any you should not have to read over 15-20 XP threads to find the solution. I would give you the solution but I just changed computers and don't have all my notes transferred yet. Just read any of my comments in threads that have graphics in the post and you'll nail it. Hint: delete upper and lower filters fix. I would like to add this. Windows XP only provides support to read a data or music disk and to burn a cd-r disk. Anything else you will need software (not drivers) to make the drive perform all the functions it was designed to do, ie: to burn dvd disks or cd-rw disks compatible recording software (like Nero or Easy Cd/DVD Creator is required. Likewise, if you want to play dvd disks, insure you have the proper dvd decoding software (like WinDVD or PowerDVD) installed. Also, make sure your Nero is latest version, ie: updated to latest Nero offers. Using OLD recording software in Windows XP does not work very well. Bigant messenger for enterprise crack. I haven't had a chance to try connecting device to another computer yet, but I am certainly going to try that. Yes, I have updated the firmware to the latest version when I used the device in the past, but I don't know if there have been other updates since then. I am not sure if I have an 840e or 840i. It only says dvd840 on the front, and on the bottom, it actually says 840y. I seem to remember it saying 840e in device manager when it was installed in the past. Thank you so much for your reply, erico.
